A reusable Pizza Box — Sustainable Design Concept
PIZZycle is a reusable and eco-friendly pizza packaging concept, which substitutes cardboard pizza boxes and offers value to pizza restaurants, customers and the environment.
The packaging is composed of two identical, round shells, following the shape of a pizza. PIZZycle can be carried easily, cleaned in the dishwasher and stored efficiently. Transportation as well as storage are optimized due to the round and conic form. By emphasizing only on the main functionalities the design becomes minimalistic and allows an efficient use of material.
As the material needs to be dishwasher safe, durable, lightweight, heat-resistant and recyclable, we chose to use bioplastic. Tests need to be carried out in order to identify which material works the best, if PIZZycle gets manufactured.
After the restaurants receive the boxes, they carry the orders of the customers in return for a small deposit. By offering four different colours it is possible to mark flavours, spices or personal preferences. After fulfillment, the customers bring back the boxes to any pizza restaurant that is part of the PIZZycle system to regain their deposit. Whenever the restaurant notices a broken box, they send it back to the factory, where the material will be reintegrated into the manufacturing process.
The purpose of the project is to minimize pollution and waste incineration: The common single-use boxes are left with food residue and therefore become non-recyclable waste. After being collected, this kind of waste either gets burned or becomes landfill. Due to the new restrictions during the Corona pandemic the amount of take-away packaging has increased even more and has caused city centers to be polluted with packaging.
Therefore, in order to use up less resources, to produce less CO2 and to decrease the amount of packaging waste in cities, there needs to be a shift to reusable take-away packaging. Our vision is to implement PIZZycle worldwide as a sustainable alternative.
